The idea of a 'Phonography Ensemble' has been inspired by the Seattle Phonographers Union, a loose artist collective that has been active for the past twenty years. Only performance rule: the used field recordings may not be defamiliarized by digital effects, the inherent aesthetic potential of the 'acoustic readymades' thus remaining in the foreground.
SUAL 2017 revives an idea which has already been realized once a decade ago, within the framework of the second SUAL festival. While only male artists were involved in 2007, this year's edition exclusively features female protagonists.
